Proud of what exactly?

I've always been perplexed by people who always need something to be "proud" of; moreover, they want you and, in many cases, command you to feel the same as if it were some kind of divine moral obligation. They say you should be proud of your culture, your ancestors, your country, and so on. But what I've always wondered is: How can you be "proud" of someone, say, for instance, your ancestors, among whom some might have been dazzling personifications of bravery and kindness, and some others might be repugnat racists, casteists, or senile dogmatists and fanatics? You certainly don't get to cherrypick the good side and renounce the dark one like an astute tartuffe. After pondering over it long enough, I personally have concluded that it is better to be proud of your own achievements, however small or huge they may be, and avoid this perplexing moral bondage.
